Battleship New Jersey Educational Programs

With the Battleship New Jersey’s educational programs, teachers are able to find resources that supplement and reinforce the curriculum used in their classrooms. Each class addresses several core curriculum standards and is designed to provide cross-curricular instruction. Preparatory materials are provided for each class, as well as several forms of assessment. The majority of these assessments, which were created by experienced certified teachers, were written to meet the needs of standardized testing in the state of New Jersey and beyond (HSPA/GEPA). With advance notice, modifications in content and grade level can be made for each of the classes.

Traveling Trunk Program (TT)
  • World War II era canvass sea bags are filled with educational resources which can be utilized in your classroom. Artifacts, primary source documents, and lesson plans for a one-week period are at your disposal and are organized around specific topics in the battleship’s 60 year history. Teachers may both pick up and drop off the bag for a two-week period, or it may be shipped ground UPS for an additional fee. Bags are now available on WWII, Korea/Cold War, Vietnam, and the Beirut Crisis. Additional topics will be available in the spring. A $200 refundable deposit is required. The cost of the trunk is $75.
Outreach Program (OP)
  • The Battleship New Jersey’s Education Outreach Program brings a piece of the ship’s history to your classroom. Students will be engaged and entertained while studying artifacts, primary source documents, and other hands-on activities. Teachers may choose from cross-curricular classes which encompass math, science, history, social studies, and language arts and are aligned with state core curriculum standards (titles are listed on the following pages). The cost of the class is $125 plus mileage if outside a fifty mile radius of the ship.
Distance Learning Program (DL)
  • Through the advent of video conferencing, your students can “visit” the Battleship New Jersey while learning about topics which correlate to your curriculum. This interactive experience is supplemented by virtual reality demonstrations, oral history video clips, and artifacts which enhance the objectives of the lesson. The cost of this class is $125 ($80 if you are a member of the Garden State Distance Learning Consortium).
On Board Classes (OB)
  • Your students will have the opportunity to take a class in one of several subject areas on board the New Jersey. Taught by certified teachers, these classes allow children to experience first hand what they have learned in their text books. Our science/math classes are hands-on, encouraging students to experiment with the concepts they’ve learned, while our history/language arts classes involve handling artifacts and speaking to those who have experienced the era studied. Class sizes are limited to 35 students, and also include an abbreviated tour which is relevant to the lesson. Larger groups may be accommodated with advanced notice. Cost is $65 per class.

What Good is a Parabola, Anyway? - Math/Science (OP, DL, OB)
  • Class description: Students will examine how the Battleship New Jersey aimed the 16 inch guns with the assistance of a quadratic equation. These guns are capable of firing a 2000 pound projectile up to 23 miles and landing that shell within 30 yards of the intended target. This is amazing when one realizes that the equipment used to aim the guns was designed in the 1930’s before GPS, digital computers, or Radar, and is still accurate enough to be used without change today. This is all accomplished with the use of parabolas, which is also applied in this class to hands-on activities such as a quarterback throwing a football or a batter hitting a baseball. A video segment which demonstrates the 16 inch guns in action, 360 degree looks at applicable areas of the ship, as well as a life-size replica of an actual shell (over 5 ft. tall!) serve to enhance the educational experience.

Sea water was used for all the basic energy needs of the sailors – from heating and cooking, to propelling the ship through the ocean. Students will experience through virtual reality areas of the ship which are responsible for the processes necessary for the conversion of these resources.
