Living History Day: The Korean War
Saturday, February 13, 2027
On February 13, Battleship New Jersey returns to the Korean War era. Recommissioned in November 1950, she sailed for Korea and bombarded enemy positions along the coast with her 16-inch guns. For one day, reenactors, a guest author, a Navy film from the period, and a memorial ceremony bring that chapter of the ship’s history back on board.
Featured Lecture: Sergeant Reckless, America’s War Horse
Robin Hutton, author of Sgt. Reckless: America’s War Horse, shares the story of Reckless, a small Mongolian mare who carried ammunition for a Marine recoilless rifle platoon in Korea. Reckless earned two Purple Hearts and retired as a staff sergeant.
Film Screening: Floating Fortress (1952)
This short U.S. Navy film shows daily life on board Battleship New Jersey during the Korean War, from crew living conditions to shore bombardment. Running time is about 14 minutes.
Memorial Ceremony: Honoring Seaman Robert Oesterwind
On May 20, 1951, a North Korean shore battery at Wonsan struck the ship. Seaman Robert Oesterwind was mortally wounded. Join us as we honor his service and sacrifice.
