Position: Full-Time Facilities Custodian
Job Description
The Custodian will be responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment throughout the Battleship tour areas, administrative offices, restrooms, the Visitors Center and the grounds of the museum. This role also includes janitorial support for the ship’s Overnight Encampment Program, which hosts youth and group stays aboard the ship.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine cleaning and sanitizing of all public and staff areas, including:
- Shipboard tour areas (decks, passageways, compartments)
- Administrative offices
- Public and staff restrooms
- Visitors Center (interior and entrance areas)
- Maintain cleanliness and readiness of sleeping quarters and restrooms used by Overnight Encampment Program guests.
- Refill paper products, hand soap, and other supplies as needed.
- Perform waste removal, including emptying trash bins and recyclables throughout the ship and facilities.
- Monitor cleaning supply inventory and notify supervisor when restocking is needed.
- Report maintenance issues or safety hazards promptly to the Operations DED
- Support event setups, including ensuring spaces are clean and organized before and after functions.
- Adhere to safety procedures and wear appropriate protective equipment when using cleaning chemicals.
- Work evenings and weekends as required, especially during overnight programs and special events
- Perform landscaping tasks in and around the landside Visitor Center and parking areas.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Prior custodial or janitorial experience preferred.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Comfortable working in unique environments, including shipboard conditions (tight spaces, ladders, steep stairs).
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks including standing, walking, bending, and climbing
- Dependable, punctual, and able to follow verbal and written instructions.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, in areas that may be hot, cold, damp, or drafty depending on the weather and shipboard location.
- Exposure to variable temperatures, including extreme summer heat and winter cold, especially in unheated or non-air-conditioned areas of the ship
- Must be able to navigate a historic naval vessel, including steep stairs, ladders, narrow passageways, and metal decks.
- Must be able to work weekends, as well as day-time and night-time schedules

Occasionally reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling. Frequent sitting, standing and walking, which may be required for long periods of time, and may involve climbing stairs and walking up inclines and on uneven terrain. Additional physical requirements may include frequent lifting and/or moving up to 10 pounds and occasional lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds. The job requires working outside in cold and hot weather conditions.

Position: Security Guard
Position Overview
As a Security Personnel, you will be the first point of contact for visitors at the Battleship New Jersey Museum & Memorial. Your primary role is to ensure a secure and welcoming environment while performing vital security and customer service duties with professionalism and friendliness.
Responsibilities
- Warmly greet and assist museum staff, guests, volunteers, and vendors upon entry to create a positive first impression.
- Monitor the Clinton Street, Marina, and VIP parking areas to ensure safety and security.
- Manage access points efficiently to control entry into the premises.
- Operate and monitor surveillance equipment, electrical systems, lighting, and HVAC systems.
- Observe, document, and report security incidents and safety conditions, including accidents and medical emergencies.
- Respond swiftly and effectively to fire and security alarms.
- Secure the premises against unauthorized access and potential threats.
- Manage vehicle traffic within designated areas to ensure safety for all visitors.
- Collect parking donations from guests in various parking areas.
- Monitor deliveries.
Work Schedule
Security Guards will work eight-hour shifts providing 24/7 coverage, with the following shift times:
- 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
- 4:00 p.m. – 12:00 Midnight
- 12:00 Midnight – 8:00 a.m.
- Availability to work weekends and holidays is required.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Demonstrated strong customer service skills and the ability to handle inquiries with professionalism.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a proven ability to manage typical crisis situations efficiently.
- Neat, professional appearance; dress code includes a red shirt, red hat, and black or khaki pants. Hat, shirt and jacket provided.
- Friendly demeanor with a commitment to providing exemplary customer service.
Physical and Mental Requirements
- Clear vision, hearing, speaking, and writing abilities.
- Occasional reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
